This time, you can choose from more than 462 different store models, including specialty areas like bowling alleys, banks, and Internet cafes. You'll manage every aspect of a major shopping mall, from hiring to firing mall staff to setting rent for individual shops. Also, you must contend with random events, such as floods, fires, and criminal attacks. Increase profits by serving the needs of your shoppers, each with his or her own personal shopping preferences, mental state, and financial standing. If there’s one thing that seems to be making a big hit in the gaming world, it’s tycoon games. Well, why shouldn’t they? I mean, all of us at one time or another have sat and thought about how neat it would be to have lots and lots of money, and also how cool it would be to own our own successful business that brings in lots and lots of money. Over the course of the years, we’ve seen everything from zoos to trailer parks offered out to see how successful you can be in building and running your own business, so how about your own shopping mall? Well, Mall Tycoon did pretty well when it was released a year or so ago, and now all the fun is back in Mall Tycoon 2. Mall Tycoon 2 pretty much is your typical tycoon style game which has you going into campaign settings like “Double your profit over the next ten years” or free building your own successful shopping mall. There are a variety of stores to choose from, ranging from your typical shops like toy stores and video game retailers to some more obscure ones like dental surgery to play around with and add in to help maximize your profits. The main attraction to Mall Tycoon 2 for me personally was in the amount of detail that was paid to every kind of aspect that you would expect to find in running your own business. As you build and manage, you can pay attention to everything from the sex and age of your shoppers to where they live, how much money they have, and how they arrive at the mall. Basically, these things help to determine where you need to pay more attention to, like adding more hardware shops in to grow your adult male shopper base, or looking at how expensive your shops are to make sure that you are doing your best to cater to everyone. You also have full ability to customize the look and decorations in the mall, which can help in the overall ambiance and enjoyment of your shoppers. OK, we all know that where there is money and people, there is also an opportunity for crime, property defacement, and trash. One thing that you also have to balance is shoveling out tons of money on shops alone versus personnel and training. Mall Tycoon 2 +1 trainer for PC and supports RETAIL. If your crime rate goes up, shoppers will begin to taper off and shops start to close due to lost business and obviously who wants to wade through garbage while trying to go to EB to buy “Mall Tycoon 2”? Part of your management ability will also be to take your staff of people like hired goons and cleaners at the start of the game and do research to begin getting such personnel additions as rent a cops and sweepers. If you are lax in this area, this will cause the crime rate and problems to go up, and once people have lost interest in your mall it’s hard to get them back. Now, even if the crime rate does tend to be low, you occasionally have to do things to help your business during good and tough times. Since you set everything from the% sales cut that you receive to the amount of monthly rent that each shop has to pay out to you, you can ask for higher rent or higher cuts in what gets paid out. If things get a little rough, you can also help those who make your money by lowering these things for them to give them a little break. In addition, you can also run monthly ads on TV, billboards, or in the newspaper during certain months to help draw more people into the mall. OK, now that you know all about the game options, lets look at the actual mall building itself. This game gives you the full ability to build floors, walls, doors, and indoor / outdoor environments. You also go in and determine how big the shops themselves will be, or do a Sears thing and put multiple different ones together like a hardware store and a shoe store, and you can even add multiple floors to your creation to try and build the ultimate shopping experience. I even built a pretty accurate version of the local two-floor mall here in Louisville, KY that I shop in, and although I didn’t really do that great with it from a management perspective, it was fun to try and get an idea on how well I would do managing it in real life. Overall, Mall Tycoon 2 could be a good buy for the Tycoon fan. The full ability to manage all of your stats and shopper data in order to maximize your abilities and style is detailed enough to be helpful, but not confusing, and with over 460 store models to choose from and unlock as you go, there’s a lot of different variety and ways to build the ultimate shopping experience for both older and younger gamers alike. While it may not sway the action gamer to liking tycoon games, it should keep management fans happy for a while. Gameplay: 7.8 Play in either a campaign setting or fully customize your own free building enjoyment as you see fit. There is a good amount of detail in everything from shopper data and demographics to store info like the amount of customers that they are bringing in to how much they charge, and you also control how much of a sales cut you receive, how much they pay you in rent, and can even run ads and promotions to try and help your shopper turnout. You also have to pay attention to hiring and firing of personnel and possibly increasing crime rate which helps add in a little more than just building shops. There are also over 460 store models to choose from, so it gives you a good incentive to keep playing and see what you can unlock. Graphics: 6.9 Graphically, the stores and designs of the mall are colorful and customizable, but the overall graphics look outdated. The characters are blocky whether in an over the top zoom or if you descend down into an FPS view from a shopper’s perspective, and all of the items in the shops are the blurred collaborations of a lot of different pics blended together. You can fully rotate and zoom the camera around, so it is helpful in always being able to see what you need to see. Sound: 7.1 The smooth jazz soundtrack was really relaxing and professional, and I’m a big fan of that style of music so I enjoyed listening to it. There’s not really a whole lot else going on in the effects department though, except for the occasional sound of a cash register, a police whistle, or the crowd cheering as you hit milestones in your achievement. Difficulty: Medium There is a challenge in balancing all of the demographics, crime rates, building, and money management aspects of the game, but even younger players shouldn’t have too much of an issue hopping in and getting started to see how they do. The game also does a good job in letting you know what’s going on to help in making decisions. Concept: 7.5 The concept of building your own mall didn’t sound like a lot to me up front, but I have to say that there is a lot that goes into it and a lot that went into this game from a detail perspective. Overall: 7.7 Mall Tycoon 2 provides some good fun and an enjoyable tycoon game experience for both beginning and novice players alike. It’s challenging, but not too difficult, and after maybe having to do a test run to gauge mistakes and potential issues, players should be able to get going pretty quickly. It may not do a lot to turn the heads of players who aren’t really into Tycoon games, but potential business owners out there should have a lot of fun. You’ve done enough shopping at your local mall see how well you do managing your own!
